According to philosopher David Chalmers, consciousness is not physical. Imagine a philosophical zombie. They are physically identical to normal humans, but there's one important difference: these zombies don't have any conscious experience. There's no "what it's like" to be a zombie. These beings aren't real, but they're not impossible. If they're made of all the same physical stuff that we are, but lack the conscious experience, then our conscious experience must not be physical.
