In 1872, the first horse-drawn tram line was opened in the Romanian capital of București (Bucharest), and electrification followed in 1894. To this day, with a route length of around 140 kilometers, it is by far the largest tram network in the country. It is notable that there is no route that crosses the city center; instead, all lines end at loops on the edge of the city center or bypass it completely.
In recent years, time has not stood still here either: 100 long low-floor cars provide more comfort and capacity on many lines, and the last Tatra T4Rs are about to be retired. The V3A articulated trams, which were built in the company's own main workshop between 1972 and 1990, are still very present. Despite numerous renovation projects, the tracks on some routes are still in a catastrophic condition.
