The first horse-drawn tram was in operation in Brăila as early as 1886, and the conversion to electric operation followed in 1900. The network, which is now around 20 kilometres long, consists of a long north-south axis, which splits not far from the city centre and bypasses the city centre on two ring roads.

Due to extensive track renewals, almost all tram traffic was stopped in 2023, only two ex-Vienna E1 trams are still in use between the Radu Negru depot, the salt lake (Lacu Sărat) and the industrial district. All other second-hand vehicles are no longer in use. Instead, two Imperio low-floor trams have been in use on part of line 22 since the beginning of 2024. Further new trams are in production, so that the renovated routes can soon be reopened. A very remarkable turn of events, because in 2020 the tracks and vehicles were in a miserable condition even by Romanian standards.
