The Oberrheinische Eisenbahngesellschaft (OEG) ordered a total of 35 Düwag GT8 trams between 1966 and 1989. These differed from each other in some details; for example, in the 1990s, air conditioning was installed in the six newest trams. These trams were tailored especially to the needs of intercity transport and differed significantly from the Düwag trams in other german cities.
The GT8s were mainly in service on the interurban circle line 5 between the cities of Mannheim, Heidelberg and Weinheim, including some services as double-sets. The delivery of modern Variobahn trams gradually meant the end of most GT8s; since 2013, eight trams have been kept for the morning rush hour and as a reserve. Due to the delivery of further new vehicles, the retirement of the last cars is foreseeable.
