What is your opinion of Unity vs UDK vs Blender?
It seems like Blender can do any rendering and image manipulation you need, turning everything into anything else you want. UDK is harder to import models into, while Unity can import anything from anywhere, including Blender.
What do I have to pay for that functionality?
UDK is free if your games are free. If you charge anything for the games, you have to pay around a hundred dollars for the license, and about 25% for the sales after 50K.
I’ll worry about the royalties after I earn 50K. How does UDK’s cost compare to Unreal Engine?
Unreal Engine 4 is available for $19 a month plus 5% royalties. That makes it pretty affordable.
What do I get for cost of the UDK?
Unreal development kit is very powerful. Unreal is very robust and rarely crashes.
How does that contrast to Unity?
Unity is available for free, but the free version lacks the advanced lighting and GFX.
Sometimes you have to pay to play, wait, pay to game develop. There are free game engines, but they lack a lot of the advanced functionality.
Unity Pro’s advantages include being available for a lot of different operating systems.
What do you think of Unity in general?
Unity is easier to use by many people’s standards. Unity has good graphics, though not as good as CryEngine.
CryEngine’s name is apt – it makes people want to cry trying to figure it out.
Unity lacks pre-set game modes; you have to pay for them.
What about UDK?
UDK has FPS from the get-go. And it is a very powerful FPS, without paying for extras.
Not all games are first person shooter.
UDK does not do games other than FPS without changes to the core engine.
UDK has good graphics.
UDK is not as good at converting games to run on iOS and Android. And it is harder to import models from other things like Blender and Maya.
What should I use?
Unity is easier to use for a beginner compared to UDK.
I need to know how those compare to Blender for game development, and not just creating pretty pictures.
Altered models from Blender can be imported into UDK.
And you can make animation in Blender, too. Games as well.
What gets funny is how many people did not even know that Blender had a game engine.
It is not as easy to use as other game development engines. At least Blender has a lot of documentation.
