Standard metal 3D printing methods (laser bed powder fusion, or LPBF) causes products to warp, which can make them unusable in the aerospace, automotive, and biomedical industries that rely on them. This led University of Michigan researchers to develop thermal-model-based software that directs printer lasers on the optimal scanning sequence to reduce warpage.

This research was led by Chinedum Okwudire, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan College of Engineering.
