Pearl Jam's "Yield" was released in February of 1998. Their first stop was New Zealand and Australia. Unbeknownst to them, Oasis would completely an utterly unravel in Australia as they toured around the same time as Pearl Jam.
There were three instances where Vedder would bring up the band. Once in Wellington, a second time in Melbourne and a third time in Adelaide.
In Wellington, Vedder makes an off-hand comment that "Oasis is gonna have a blast" in Wellington, which drew massive boos from the crowd. It's incredibly ominous and ironic. This was just a couple days after the band had been banned by Cathay Pacific, so Vedder adds his own joke about the crowd working for the airline.
Melbourne is tamer in comparison. Vedder states that they found tons of cocaine in their dressing room, this is only a day after Oasis played, so it's just a playful jab.
The third one, in Adelaide, Vedder tells a story about how he was playing pool and someone asked him for a picture before headbutting a guy, finishing with "I love being a rockstar." A clear reference to Liam being arrested for doing exactly that a couple days prior.
Honestly, its just funny bits of banter. Oasis probably didn't see it that way, and Liam's comments in 2000 during the festival tour are possibly derived from these comments Vedder made. "My ears are in fucking pain."
It's funny, seeing the only other reaction the band had was at the DV8 Club in Seattle in January of 1995, three years before all of this.
To be fair on Eddie, it was extremely easy to do this. Controversy followed Oasis like a hawk. Cathay Pacific, the Princess Diana comments, "I'd rather walk", headbutting, being shitfaced half the tour...
