Bucharest, the capital of Romania, is served by 27 tram lines on a 140-kilometer network, making it the biggest tram system of the country.
Most of the time, the trams run in the middle of wide, busy main roads. An exception is the route to Pipera, running along the Tei lake. A few decades ago, the trams have been banned from most parts of the city center to make room for wider roads and new buildings.
The rolling stock consists mostly of the articulated V2A and V3A class trams, which were built in the transport company's main workshop between 1972 and 1990. In 2018, some Tatra T4R cars were still in service in the south-western districts. The purchase of up to 100 new trams is planned for the next few years.
