You can see here my layout of position lights in my heavily modified Walkera 36 RC helicopter. Implemented after an unwanted crash due to setting sun.
Rear leds: one white and one blinking.
Left led is red, right led is green. Care has been taken to be able to see either red or green, but not both, what was not obvious given the semi-transparent construction of helicopter frame. in order to be able to tell when the helicopter is facing me, 2 blue leds facing forward-down and forward-up has been added (this is not standard, they should be bright white).
The whole setup draws negligible 6x100mA, and as the whole airframe of my chopper is grounded (- wire), only one (+ wire) is needed for each led.
In order to avoid draining the amperage from receiver and servos, they are connected directly at the 3S1P lipo. Note also 3 color stripes from cheap sticking band (red and white) on each blade. The small white bell blades are also improving the visibility. But probably the most important thing for late evening flights are circular polarizing glasses (against cloured reflections from the sun) and anti-mosqito spray.
The gyro built-in LED (light blue) has been covered with black tape, as well as the gyro cables outlet.
Blinking leds when used alone are not very useful as they are invisible when not lit and in case of doubt this 0.5s of delay is too much.
