For 75 years now, the Space Physics Research Laboratory (SPRL) at the University of Michigan has dreamt up and designed instruments to expand our understanding of this world and the galaxy beyond. https://news.engin.umich.edu/2021/07/...

And as the research center celebrates that milestone, the work shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.

SPRL engineers have created sensors that monitor ocean surface wind speeds to track and predict the paths of hurricanes that pose a threat to people and property in the planet’s coastal regions. Their instruments have increased our understanding of Earth’s upper atmosphere, helping improve the performance of aircraft and spacecraft. And they’re currently unraveling mysteries of the sun’s heliosphere 94 million miles away, where activity holds the potential to cause catastrophic damage to our planet’s electrical grid.
