Fluctuation theorems provide a correspondence between properties of quantum systems in thermal equilibrium and a work distribution arising in a non-equilibrium process that connects two quantum systems. Building upon these theorems, we'll describe a fast quantum algorithm to simulate thermal states of quantum systems on a quantum computer. We'll also analyze the algorithm's complexity in various examples, and show that it is a significant improvement over prior methods for this problem.
