Quantum error correction relies on encoding so-called logical qubits within many physical qubits. Ideally, increasing the number of physical qubits participating in this code will improve the suppression of logical errors. In reality, adding more physical qubits can introduce more errors, and can add enough error overhead such that the benefits of quantum error correction are completely eliminated. In this presentation, I will discuss how our team at Google Quantum AI improved the error rates in physical qubit operations, and how this enabled our team to overcome any additional error overhead and demonstrate improved error suppression by expanding the number of physical qubits participating in the code.
