Former Dutch National Anthem: Wien Neêrlands Bloed

"Wien Neêrlands bloed" ("Those in whom Dutch blood") is a Dutch patriotic song, and was the national anthem of the Kingdom of the Netherlands between 1815 and 1932. The lyrics were written by Hendrik Tollens, and the music composed by Johann Wilhelm Wilms.

At the foundation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1815, it was decided that a new national anthem was needed, in order to adopt a politically neutral hymn. This new hymn would replace "Het Wilhelmus", which was considered as being too factional due to its Orangist associations.

However, by the 20th century, "Wien Neêrlands bloed" was officially replaced by "Het Wilhelmus", which became the national anthem once more on 10 May 1932. The replacement had much to do with the fact the "new" 1815 anthem had become even more controversial than the "Wilhelmus" had been, with Socialists refusing to sing it.

Bij de oprichting van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden in 1815 werd besloten dat er een nieuw volkslied moest komen om een politiek neutrale hymne aan te nemen. Deze nieuwe hymne zou "Het Wilhelmus" vervangen, dat als te factioneel werd beschouwd vanwege de oranjegezinde associaties.

In de 20e eeuw werd "Wien Neêrlands bloed" echter officieel vervangen door "Het Wilhelmus", dat op 10 mei 1932 opnieuw het volkslied werd. De vervanging had veel te maken met het feit dat het "nieuwe" volkslied uit 1815 nog controversiëler was geworden dan het "Wilhelmus" was geweest, omdat socialisten weigerden het te zingen.
