This baby elephant is trapped in a well, but some friendly humans are determined to free it.
The calf was traveling with its family in the Indian state of Kerala when it fell into a well and cried for help. Kerala’s department of forest and wildlife used an excavator for four hours to dig out a path to safety, while the herd stood by and waited.
Once the baby was reunited with its family, one of the adults made a surprising gesture. The elephant appears to salute the work crew with its trunk, and the humans cheer in response.
India has a large and stable elephant population. Some 27,000 elephants call the country home.
This herd will never forget a small act of kindness.
