Josiah hoped that braces had corrected his pediatric scoliosis and that he would be done with treatment heading into his teenage years. And then he grew again. The curve in his spine was getting worse and it was time, again, to consider his treatment options for pediatric scoliosis.

Luckily, our Pediatric Spine Program had started performing a procedure that was relatively new to children’s spine care: vertebral body tethering. Dr. Mark Erickson, Medical Director of our Spine Program, is one of the top pediatric spinal surgeons in the country and a leader in using pediatric VBT to repair scoliosis and pediatric spinal deformities. He walked Josiah and his parents, Kelly and Jason, through the procedure and performed the surgery that helped Josiah get back to the things he loves.

Now Josiah is back to mountain biking competitions — winning most of them — taking five-hour bike rides and just being a teenager. See how our pediatric spine experts helped him get there.
