Can cars that talk to each other made the roads safer? A new Safety Pilot Program (http://safetypilot.umtri.umich.edu/) launched by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) aims to find out. In the largest connected-vehicle, street-level pilot project ever conducted, UMTRI has partnered with the U.S. Department of Transportation to conduct a $22 million initiative to see how well wireless communication technology works in the real world. 3,000 vehicles in the Ann Arbor area have been equipped with technology that will assess the movement of vehicles nearby and notify the drivers if a risky situation arises.

ABOUT THE INSTITUTE: UMTRI (http://www.umtri.umich.edu/news.php) conducts interdisciplinary research to increase driving safety and further transportation systems knowledge. UMTRI Director Peter Sweatman (http://www.umtri.umich.edu/people.php...) is working to create new research and policy capabilities to address the broader challenges of safety, mobility, energy and greenhouse emissions.
