Braces were very effective at treating Katie’s pediatric scoliosis until she turned 17. That’s when her doctor recommended surgery and Katie’s family was given an option they hadn’t thought much about before — robotic surgery for scoliosis.
Katie’s mom, Suzanne, asked Katie’s doctor which surgeons they should consider for Katie’s surgery. Her doctor was adamant about who the best person was to perform this robotic surgery — Dr. Mark Erickson, Medical Director of our Pediatric Spine Program.
Dr. Erickson has performed hundreds of robotic spine surgeries and explains how it helps kids like Katie with pediatric scoliosis. Learn about how robotics makes pediatric scoliosis surgery more accurate and the main myth about robotic surgery that Dr. Erickson wants to dispel. And watch as Katie explains how Dr. Erickson prepared her for surgery and what her scoliosis recovery was like.
“Within months we were skiing and doing things we didn’t think she’d be able to do,” says Edward, Katie’s dad. “To see her recover that quick was amazing to us.”
