SOCIAL MEDIA AGE
South Australia is looking at making some new laws, cracking down on social media. Yep, the state's government is trying to figure out how it can stop people who are underaged from using platforms like TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat. While most social media platforms have age limits, experts say they're not always properly enforced. So SA wants to make some new laws that would force them to stop kids under the age of 14 from joining or risk facing some pretty hefty fines. The proposed laws also mean 14 and 15-year-olds would need parental consent to get a social media account, and that parents could even sue a platform if their child is harmed while using it. But there are still big questions about how all this would even work, and some reckon we should be trying to make online spaces safer instead of banning them.
BOEING STARLINER
Boeing's Starliner spacecraft has finally landed back on Earth, but it left something pretty important behind. The two astronauts it carried up to the International Space Station didn't make the trip back home after the craft was deemed too risky to travel back on after encountering some tech problems. The astronauts will return to Earth in a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule in February, extending their eight-day stay to an eight month stay!
PARALYMPICS WRAP UP
We finished ninth overall, taking home 18 gold, 17 silver and 28 bronze medals! Australia's final medal was secured by Madison de Rozario who claimed silver in the women's wheelchair marathon. And as for the closing ceremony? Well, it was action-packed, with Aussie flag bearers James Turner and Lauren Parker leading the way.
US OPEN
Speaking of things wrapping up, the 2024 US Open has also come to an end! The men's title was taken out by Italy's Jannick Sinner after defeating America's Taylor Swift. Ah no, that's not right, ahh she was just there watching. Taylor Fritz, in a straight sets victory. Meanwhile the women's trophy went home with Aryna Sabelenka after taking out the USA's Jessica Pegula.
DOLOMITENMANN
Speechless is exactly how this race is gonna leave you. This is the 37th edition of the Dolomitenmann, referred to as "the world's most extreme team relay race". Where 220 teams are pushed to their limits in Austria by running, paragliding, mountain biking, and kayaking their way to victory.
MUD BOW
And finally, it's time to get muddy cause this is the Mud Bow. In this version of American football, players trudge though knee-deep mud while trying to reach the end zone. Yeah I think I'll pass.
DAVID POCOCK AI
First up, to some AI generated videos of the Prime Minister and leader of the Opposition. Making them say things they never actually said. These videos were posted by independent senator David Pocock. Who says his purpose wasn't to spread disinformation, rather, to show his followers just how easy it is.
DEEPFAKE DETECTOR
Now to a new invention, that might one day be able to help us with that problem. A Chinese tech company has showed off a new software it's developing that can detect AI in videos. It works by analysing each frame of a video to spot little glitches and imperfections caused by AI manipulation, and gives a rating based how likely it thinks the video is fake or not.
BIGGEST PHONE
And finally, to the biggest phone in the world. Fully functioning, fitted with cameras, speakers, and a 400 watt torch. YouTubers Mrwhosetheboss and DIY Perks teamed up to make the Largest Phone Replica, coming in at just over 2 meters tall. And yes, that's a world record.
