$20,000 F-18 RC model crashes on maiden flight, making the flight cost $1000 per second.

The CG was placed 1.5ft aft of the design point, causing the plane to be very tail heavy. While all the controls function, the plane is unstable with the CG so far back. It uncontrollably pitches up and stalls before falling to the ground and breaking into many pieces on impact. The turbine engine and some of the electronics were recovered.

During takeoff, the decorative canopy can be seen falling off. This is not flight critical and is not the cause of the crash. Bad CG placement is the cause of the crash.

This was a preliminary test flight for a school research project that did not go as planned.
