When you connect with someone new, your instinct might be to jump into small-talk questions like “What do you do?” But research shows digging deeper is a better way to build connections.
We tend to underestimate how much other people will enjoy meaningful conversation, even though it’s correlated with higher levels of happiness. In a dozen experiments with roughly 1,800 individuals — from business executives to visitors in public parks — researchers found that people were more content after having deep conversations with people they’d just met.
So, here are a few questions you can ask to move from “small talk” to “deep talk.”
While you shouldn’t throw all caution to the wind, research implies: “The person next to you would probably be happier talking about their passions and purpose than the weather.”
