Shaolin Temple Martial Arts - 少林拳 - Collection of Forms - Shi De Yang - 释德扬
-Some General History:
Besides some weird claims Shaolin Temple has had a very long history of Martial Arts. Earliest records at least indicate going back to the Tang Dynasty. What hardly can be said is to what extent.
Some people credit the beginning of Shaolin Martial Arts with Bodhidharma(Da Mo) and the development of Luohan Quan a name with a legendary status in the Martial World. If he had Martial Arts or just taught Cultivation Methods we may never know.
It is also unclear if Shaolin ever had its distinctive Martial Arts which are strictly "Shaolin" so to speak. Over the Centuries Shaolin absorbed vast amounts of Martial Arts Material from the outside world and Monks would expand the material through practice and bring in new Material.
Which may is also a part reason for the confusion people have about Shaolin. Also another reason may be that Shaolin got almost totally destroyed 3 times in history including an unkown number of its Martial Material.
There could be said a lot more but that would be too much for this video discription.
-Some General Information about Shaolin Forms:
The History about many Shaolin Forms is pretty complex. The easiest part is that many of the forms got split into at least 3 sets. From here it gets pretty confusing. Some sets got renamed. For example you have a form like Meihua Quan. The Meihua Quan you see is pretty much just the first 2 roads and the 3 road is hidden under a different style name. This is just an theoretical example but demonstrates part of the mess you get yourself into studying Shaolin. Another thing is these forms are oftentimes parts of Systems and Sub-Systems and they kinda can have an order, but almost nobody can tell you it.
Some general information about Shi De Yang:
I will not repeat simple general information about Master De Yang. I think what is important in terms of this collection is that Master De Yang was a key figure in restoring Shaolin Martial Arts and Culture in the 80is. He was lucky to get send all over Asia to collect the remaining Shaolin Martial Arts that people brought with them at different points in time. Some people consider that he knows way more than 50 forms.
Master De Yang has done 3 DVD Series. The 1 Series was the big one with the Shaolin Xiao Hong Quan, the 3 Da Hong Quan Roads the Da Tong Bei, the Lonquan Jian, the Yinshou Gun etc. It was pretty well established that most of these forms were pretty abreviated for puplic demonstrations.
The 2 series was a short series of I think 4 DVDs. They without wanting to be disrepectful towards Master De Yang were rightfully forgotten.
Then there is the 3 Series which includes some of the forms which he had done before but not all.
Yet these forms are pretty complete, done in way more detail.
I remember talking to some Shaolin Students over 10 years ago in the Kung Fu Magazine Forums. One was a direct student of Master De Yang. He remembered asking De Yang about it and the tone was more or less that this 3 Series was the real deal when people are willing to take it.
