Figuring out your art style is a major challenge! Let me share some of my journey around Art Style for Comics and Illustration... and how often it is related more to technical limitations and practical choices rather than purely artistic inspiration...
----
In exploring art style, I've navigated a path from high school curiosity about comic book art to professional projects, grappling with the realization that style is often shaped by technical limitations. Initially, my experimentation with various traditional mediums contrasted sharply with the digital techniques I discovered were used in comics, leading me to digital art and Photoshop.
This journey underscored a crucial lesson: the characteristics of an art style are deeply intertwined with the tools and methods used to create it. For instance, the clean, vibrant look of digital colors in comics that initially attracted me was a direct result of digital techniques, which differed significantly from traditional painting methods.
Professionally, working on my first comic book project highlighted the importance of understanding technical constraints. I learned that style isn't just about aesthetic preference but involves navigating the capabilities and limitations of the mediums and tools available. This realization has informed my approach to art, pushing me to consider how technical aspects like tool selection and methodological constraints shape the final style.
Throughout this exploration, I've come to appreciate that developing a unique art style is as much about understanding and adapting to technical limitations as it is about artistic vision. This insight is crucial for artists at any stage of their career, as it influences not only how they develop their style but also how effectively they can execute their vision within the constraints of their chosen mediums
