In the film, Lady in Cement, Frank Sinatra dives down in search of treasure and, instead, finds a perfectly preserved beautiful woman, rooted to the ocean floor by a block of cement.
The strange thing about this film was, even as a child, I knew that drowning victims did not look like this... That there was something supernatural about this moment.
The name of the actress was Christine Todd. She was naked in the film or, at least, topless. But what was amazing about her appearance was not her nudity but the way she seemed to be half floating; the way her hair seemed to be one with the movement of the water. It was less like a murder victim and more like some sleeping sea-nymph.
It seemed as if the sea could bring forth its own creatures who might look human but who might be something else; something beyond us.
The idea is rife through the various Hollywood mermaids and, now, undersea superheroes whose hair can be made to look like this through CGI. They do not have to hold their breath any more the way that Christine Todd probably did.
