My Name is Emanuelle (with one M) - The Adventures of Laura Gemser
The Emanuelle films, made to capitalise on the success of the Emmanuelle films but losing an 'm' to avoid conclusion began with Bitto Albertini's 'Black Emanuelle', starring the Indonesian-born Laura Gemser. The sequels to this film, the ones that starred Laura Gemser, went on to be directed by Aristide Massaccesi (AKA Joe D'Amato) and then Bruno Mattei. They feature the adventures of a roving photo-journalist who believes very much in the ability to live and love freely and wear clothes only when it's absolutely necessary.
The thing about these films is that they have a strange quality. They exist in a travelogue world where anything is possible. Emanuelle is often out to expose and destroy those who abuse women or take their own version of libertarianism too far (as in the still-banned-in-many-countries 'Emanuelle in America). While Emmanuelle was a sexual adventurer married to a diplomat, Emanuelle makes her own way in life.
The reason these films work so well (although nobody ever went broke banking on sex and nudity) is Gemser herself. She has a strange quality on camera. Her smile can warm a room but there is also something in her that carries that haunted look. The dialogue often sounds clunky and the lips in the English or Italian versions don't often match the dialogue, but Gemser never overacts or tries too hard. She is able to embody the things that her character has seen and experienced in a stare or an expression. For that reason, I think, she has a cult following that other actresses in similar types of films don't have.
