Ornella Muti Being Photogenic with Alain Delon

In 1977, Ornella Muti was cast in the film, 'Death of a Corrupt Man' with Alain Delon. It is difficult to talk with any expertise about it as I've only seen it in French and my French is... rusty. But it is a film that has some stand out sequences and, most of all, in having Alain Delon playing opposite Muti, you have a film in which the two stars are so unbelievably photogenic that you don't really need to know what's going on. I believe it may be possible, somewhere, to get a subtitled version but it might be easier to learn the language. Shot by Henri Decaë and directed by Georges Lautner, it looks amazing. Each moment and each sequence carrying that cool demeanour that runs through the best of French thrillers.

Delon died a few weeks before this video was made and it was a shock, as if of all the movie stars of his generation, he felt like the most likely to live forever, looking tragic in a fedora or wearing a raincoat in a Paris so haunted by rain that it made London look like the Sahara. Like Muti, he was one of those actors that the camera just loved. As if it was capable of putting his soul on film. It's a strange kind of alchemy. Looking into Ornella Muti's face feels like falling into an impossible dream and looking at Alain Delon's face makes us feel that this is how we might look. Capable of seeming as world weary as Bogart or strangely innocent depending on the moment, it is easy to imagine ourselves inside his skin. Not saying very much but feeling it all.

Here, in addition to using moments from 'Death of a Corrupt Man' (Mort d'un Pourri), I have employed a couple of shots from Ornella Muti's performance in the 1978 Italian comedy 'First Love' (Primo amore) directed by Dino Risi and shot by Tonino Delli Colli. It's one of those films about an impossible relationship... But the camera captures Muti's face so perfectly. Delli Colli also shot Muti in 'Tales of Ordinary Madness' and 'The Future is Woman'.

I can't say why Muti and Delon are so photogenic. And I'm not sure anyone could really put their finger on that peculiar magic. But for me, this film is a perfect example of that ultimate special effect.
