January 1598. The Japanese have withdrawn back to their string of forts on Korea’s south coast but make no move to leave altogether. The Chinese army, under Commander-in-Chief Ma Gui, marches south from Seoul to drive them out. Forty thousand Chinese troops and 10,000 Koreans converge on the eastern end of the Japanese perimeter at Ulsan, which they see as the weakest link in the Japanese fortress chain. The Japanese here, under Kato Kiyomasa, have been desperately trying to finish a fortress atop a hill just outside Ulsan, known as Tosan, a stone castle with an outer wall of timber. The Chinese and Koreans attack before the outer wall is complete. What follows is the battle and subsequent siege of Tosan. It is a desperate struggle for the Japanese, one of the worst in the war. Of Kato Kiyomasa’s original contingent of 10,000 men, fewer than 1,000 will survive.

In Japan, meanwhile, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the architect of the Imjin War, is dying. One of his final orders is for his armies to evacuate Korea and return home.
