Replacing a quarter turn ceramic disc tap cartridge is needed to repair a kitchen tap leaking, or sometimes because of other problems.

The biggest problem I come across on a dripping tap repair is removing the old cartridge when it's super stiff.

I will occasionally need to use my large (24 "/600mm) Stillson pipe wrench to hold the tap, and my large (16"/400mm) Knipex alligator water pump pliers to turn the cartridge. These have NEVER let me down on troublesome taps.

You will only need two tools to get this job done most of the time:

• To loosen the grub screw - Either a hex (Allen) key, usually 2.5mm, or a screwdriver.

• To remove the cartridge - A spanner or pliers. This might be an adjustable spanner, fixed spanner, water pump pliers, or my favourite the Knipex pliers wrench.

(Sometimes you'll need a ratchet and a deep socket if you can't reach the nut with a spanner.)

Nut sizes on brass tap cartridges vary between 14mm-19mm.
