Kotlin aims to fill that gap of a missing modern language for the Android platform. There are a few core tenets that Kotlin lives by; it strives to be:
Concise to reduce the amount of boilerplate code you need to write.
Expressive to make your code more readable and understandable.
Safe to avoid entire classes of errors such as null pointer exceptions.
Versatile for building server-side applications, Android apps or frontend code running in the browser.
Interoperable to leverage existing frameworks and libraries of the JVM with 100 percent Java interoperability.

the Android team announced first-class support for Kotlin. We believe this is a great step for Kotlin, and fantastic news for Android developers as well as the rest of our community. We’re thrilled with the opportunities this opens up.

For Android developers, Kotlin support is a chance to use a modern and powerful language, helping solve common headaches such as runtime exceptions and source code verbosity. Kotlin is easy to get started with and can be gradually introduced into existing projects, which means that your existing skills and technology investments are preserved.

The Kotlin plugin is bundled with Android Studio starting from version 3.0. If you use an earlier version, you'll need to install the Kotlin plugin. Go to File | Settings | Plugins | Install JetBrains plugin… and then search for and install Kotlin. If you are looking at the "Welcome to Android Studio" screen, choose Configure | Plugins | Install JetBrains plugin… You'll need to restart the IDE after this completes.

We have never added a new programming language to Android... until now! With Android Studio 3.0 we are officially supporting Kotlin for creating Android apps. Learn how to start a new project with the Kotlin language enabled or how to convert your existing classes using the Convert Java file to Kotlin refactoring.
