Even if you dont want to upgrade here are some hacks which will help you improve the performance drastically:
Extend the VM heap size for Android Studio: Go to Android Studio installation path. Inside the bin folder you can see two files studio.exe.vmoptions and studio64.exe.vmoptions. Open it using Notepad. You'll see two lines namely -Xms128m and -Xmx512m. Change it to -Xms256m and Xmx1024m. It denotes the min and max heap size (or the RAM to be allocated to the Android Studio.) More RAM better performance. Increased heap size means lesser disk swapping (between RAM and Virtual Memory) :)
Use Genymotion emulator instead of AVD: Genymotion is a 3rd party emulator which runs inside a VirtualBox. It's blazing fast. Just google it. Better yet use physical devices via USB debugging.
Enable Intel Virtualization Technology for AVD: Go to Computer System settings (depends on the your computer) and enable Intel Virtualization Technology. Install the HAXM driver and use the AVD. Nowadays, AVD doesn't run without HAXM driver installed. Google it for detailed information.
Make the Gradle Build faster: Everyone knows that the Gradle build system is tad slow as compared to ANT. There are some techniques like parallel building of files and so on...Honestly I don't mess up with these things. Gradle dependencies are too sensitive to changes. You can definitely wait for the build to complete!
