Saline infusion sonography is a procedure that is done to look inside the uterus for any abnormality.
It is especially necessary for women who are planning an IVF treatment. Since the embryo is going to implant inside the uterus, it is important to check the condition of the uterus.
How is Saline infusion sonography done?
1. SIS is done via Trans Vaginal Sonography (TVS scan).
2. A TVS probe is inserted into the Vagina to scan the uterus and pelvic organs
3. Then via the probe a thin catheter is inserted into the uterus
4. Through this catheter sterile Saline solution is pushed into the uterine cavity. This helps in visualisation of the uterine cavity and the uterine lining better. Any abnormalities inside the uterus can also be detected easily.
SIS can detect a different types of uterine abnormalities like:
Polyps
Fibroids
Uterine adhesions
Congenital uterine abnormalities
Walls or septums inside uterus
Uterine Malignancies
This problems may cause difficulty in getting pregnant, difficult pregnancy and can be the reason behind miscarriage
Saline infusion sonography is a painless - office procedure that gives a wider diagnosis capability with minimum discomfort. It give better detection capability than a normal 2 dimensional ultrasound (2D USG). It is also less painful than an Hystero salpingo graphy (HSG) which uses harmful X-rays.
