Pelvic inflammatory disease is a major cause of hospitalization in young women. It leads to thousands of surgeries due to complications from the infection. Researchers believe most cases develop from sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), infections that are spread through sexual contact but there are other causes for PID as well.
One in 10 women with PID will have infertility and will find it difficult to get pregnant. PID however is curable and with properly planned treatment plan couples can conceive via IVF.
PID usually spreads in two phases. The infection causing bacteria (mostly STI) deposited in the vagina along with semen first infects the cervix. If detected at this stage further spread can be prevented by taking necessary medications. If left untreated the bacteria enters the uterus via the cervix.. it may proceed to infect the Fallopian tubes and spread outside the uterus via the Fallopian tubes.
Using Safe Protection during sex can help prevent PID and its other unwanted complications.
