In this video, you’ll find out how the National Trust is encouraging people to get together and share their hopes and fears for the places they love in a changing climate.
The conservation charity commissioned handcrafted wooden benches for three places in its care: Souter Lighthouse and The Leas on the North East coast of England, Mount Stewart in County Down, Northern Ireland and Cwm Idwal in Eryri (Snowdonia) in Wales. These benches, known as ‘story benches’, create a space for people to talk about how climate change is affecting the buildings, gardens, coastline and nature habitats.
Each bench has images and words carved into the back panel to capture the landscape and people’s relationship to it. They have been made by the Sylva Foundation – a forestry charity and wood school that uses environmentally-friendly methods.
From coastal erosion to the loss of nature habitats, climate change is affecting nature, history and beauty in different ways. Find out why the places featured in this video are so important to the people who visit them and what hopes they have for the future.
