Six people from the Mount Stewart community are invited to meet for the first time to discuss climate change and its impact on the places they love.
Learn about why this 19th-century estate is so important to them, and how a specially commissioned story bench gives people a place to share the hopes and fears they have for its future.
Overlooking Strangford Lough in County Down, Mount Stewart, cared for by the National Trust, is affected by climate change in many ways. Rising sea levels threaten the gardens and the surrounding mudflats, salt marsh and islands that support birds and seals.
The flora that’s been planted is to help provide shelter from incoming sea water.
The handcrafted wooden story bench on the estate encourages people to sit and share their stories of Mount Stewart and how it’s changing. Carved into the back panel are words and images that capture this special place and people’s relationship to it.
The bench, commissioned by the National Trust, has been made by the Sylva Foundation – a forestry charity and wood school that uses environmentally-friendly methods.
