It’s usually a simple file, in xml, rss, or in text format, and it’s basically a blueprint that search engines can scan to see all the pages of your website at a glance. This is important, because search engines like Google and others rank the pages of your site, not the site itself, and their crawlers rely on sitemaps to understand your content, and to point users that are looking for that content in your direction. This is particularly important for large websites with lots of pages, if your structure isn’t very well-organized or well-linked, if it doesn’t have many external links, or if it’s new.
But even for older sites that are quite simple and well-linked and organized, not having a sitemap is like shooting yourself in the foot. There is no downside to having one, and only an upside. "
