Martha T. Roth, Dean, Division of the Humanities and the Chauncey S. Boucher Distinguished Service Professor of Assyriology, presents her lecture "The Aims of Education: The First Four Thousand Years (2000 BC--AD 2000)."

This is the 50th anniversary of UChicago's Aims of Education Address, which began in 1961 to encourage students to reflect on the purpose and definition of education as they embark upon their collegiate years. Every year, a UChicago faculty member is invited to address students in the College regarding their view on the aims of a liberal education. In 1962, the Aims of Education Address was added to Orientation Week and officially became a tradition for incoming students.
