Anger has swept across Bengal, Maharashtra, and Assam, with citizens taking to the streets to demand swift justice for recent brutal rapes. Protests erupted after a trainee doctor in Kolkata, kindergarten children in Badlapur, and a schoolchild in Nagaon were subjected to horrific crimes. In Assam, one of the suspects died in custody, allegedly trying to escape by jumping into a pond. Custodial deaths of rape suspects, while controversial, often go unchallenged due to the heinous nature of the crimes. The public's fury recalls the 2019 Hyderabad case, where four rape suspects were killed in an encounter and the police were hailed as heroes. Bengal's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, responding to mounting outrage, demanded the suspect be hanged by August 18th. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the nation, acknowledged the deep pain and anger felt by the public, urging strict accountability at all levels. Despite efforts to expedite trials, such as the establishment of over 750 Fast Track Special Courts across India, only three are functional in West Bengal, highlighting a significant gap in the justice system.
