According to this theory balance exists when all the three elements fit together harmoniously. If there is no balance between the elements there arise the stressful situations. To remove this stressful condition is only by achieving balance between elements. ​

For example, there is a girl named Priya (P), is the person whose processes we are considering, Ravi (O), the other person, and northern food (X), the thing. There is balance between all the elements if Priya likes Ravi, Priya likes northern food, and Ravi likes northern food. If there exists dislike between Priya and Ravi, or if either of them dislikes northern food, there is a chance for stress. In the case of triad, if there are zero or two positive signs, the triad is unbalanced​
