Halong Bay is an archipelago in northeastern Vietnam, famous for its emerald green waters and with around 1,969 limestone islands and islets emerging from the sea. This stunning scenery has made Halong Bay a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994 and also one of the 7 New Natural Wonders of the World.
According to legend, when a great dragon that lived in the mountains ran to the sea, its tail dug valleys that later filled with water, leaving only pieces of land on the surface, that is, the countless islands that can be seen in the bay.
We visited Luon Cave, one of several caves in the bay, which was formed over millions of years thanks to the impact of wind and sea water. The effects of the tide, along with the flow of water, gradually eroded the foot of the limestone mountain and left a large natural tunnel. This is the Luon Cave that we can see nowadays.
We can still see the remains of the ocean in the mountain cliffs above Luon Cave. Fossil shells from oysters, snails and crabs are evidence of life that existed there millions of years ago. The sea level used to be higher than it is now, and before appearing above the sea surface, Luon Cave was an underwater cave.
The calm waters, without waves or currents, of Halong Bay are perfect for kayaking between the islands.
Even if you're not experienced in kayaking, you can't miss the chance to sail through the bay's stunning landscape. Just before sunset is the ideal time to go kayaking and see tranquil lagoons and fishing boats up close.
