First Hop Redundancy Protocol allows us to configure fail-over gateway router so that user can access WAN or internet connection even if a gateway goes down.In this session we will configure Hot standby router protocol with two gateway routers and we will see how it works, how we can create virtual IP for the interface, if your primary router gateway goes down, how secondary router automatically gets active. Even we will see how preemption operates to select an active gateway with priority.
Its a basic setup of fail-over router or gateway. If you are implementing with real operation you must take care about hello packets multicast by router to verify if they are working and operational so if you have some critical ACL rules with LAN interface make sure port number 1985 is open.
