China has produced some of the world’s most incredible cartographic traditions. Going back thousands of years ago, some of the oldest maps in the world come from China, and they are amazingly accurate and understandable maps. China has long been a place of advanced culture and philosophy, and in this video we’ll explore some of the oldest maps ever found in China and discuss what they say about human history and the ways of our ancestors.

We start off discussing maps from the Warring States period and the Qin Dynasty, and then move onto maps from the Han Dynasty, including maps found at Fangmatan (Gansu Province) and Mawangdui (Hunan Province). All of these maps were map on different material — one on bronze, one on pine boards, and one on silk. Yet all exhibit an incredible attention to detail and precision that is strikingly recognizable to modern eyes.

My goal with this series is to explore the amazing maps that humanity has created over the span of human history, and to use these as ways to connect with our ancestors. I hope you enjoy going on this journey with me, and please let me know if you like this format and if you want to see more videos.

A huge thanks to everyone that helped to contribute to this video and whose works are featured here, including:
