In this video, we go over the strategy, tactics, and outcome of the famous World War One battle fought in 1917 at Vimy Ridge in France by the Canadian Corps. The battle was an outstanding example of using complex artillery barrage tactics in coordination with soldier training to successfully take over a German position in trench warfare. The Canadians won the day, although not without much loss of life and major complications, and the victory at Vimy Ridge stands as one of the few cases of territory gained in the attrition of World War One.

This video focuses on the role of the Barrage Map, a map that was used in the planning and execution of the battle, and which outlined the "Rolling Barrage" or "Creeping Barrage", a tactic that saw precise artillery use at the same time as infantry movements to sweep over trenches in quick timelines. The map contains a lot of interesting information on how the battle progressed, the speed of the maneuvers, the training required, and even the layout of the battlefield. It serves as a window into the reality of the battle and the way the men were trained and carried out their deadly work.

This video is made to honour those who served, fought, and died in the Battle of Vimy Ridge and other battles in World War One, as part of Remembrance Day in Canada, November 11. This is an important battle in the history of Canada as a nation, and has served as an important part of every Canadian child's education for decades. We take these pieces of the past and look at them carefully, lest we forget.

My goal with this series is to explore the amazing maps that humanity has created over the span of human history, and to use these as ways to connect with our ancestors. I hope you enjoy going on this journey with me, and please let me know if you like this format and if you want to see more videos.

A huge thanks to everyone that helped to contribute to this video and whose works are featured here, including:

And of course, thanks to all the many hands along the course of history that created and shared such works, so we can all learn more from the past.
