Christopher Tye: In Nomine "Seldom sene"
London, British Library, Add. MS. 31390
"In nomine" is a musical form which flourished in England during the 16th and early 17th centuries. One of the voices presents the plainchant antiphon "Gloria tibi Trinitas" in long notes throughout the composition.
The opening section of "Seldom Sene" evokes vocal polyphony with its smooth melodic contours and calm pace... All of a sudden, there is a blaze of rhythmical complexity and "illogical" melodies with large intervals leading into the end.
The beauty and strangeness of "Seldom Sene", which is also one of the first compositions which we ever played together, moved us to name our ensemble after it. We hope you enjoy the video!
