1ST ENGLISH SERVICE
PRAYING THE LORD’S PRAYER
MATTHEW 6:5-15 | DR. JACOB CHERIAN
• Richard Foster – “Prayer is the central avenue God uses to transform us”.
• How not to pray: not just words, not a contractual relationship.
• How to pray: “The Lord’s prayer.”
• Right at the center of the Sermon on the Mount. Tertullian – summary of the whole Gospel.
• KJV – extra words, added later - “For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever, Amen.” = comes from 1 Chronicle 29:11-13.
• Our Father – we are being invited into the relationship that Jesus has with the Father and the Spirit.
• (A shorter version in Luke 11:2-4).
• Our / us - 9 times - community.
• Your - 3 times.
FOUR KEY THINGS:
1. The framework of God’s Kingdom – come on earth
Jesus – “kingdom in person”.
Hallowed = sanctified – honored – by living rightly.
2. Daily bread: Bread in the wilderness – trust – necessities (Matt. 6:33).
3. Forgiveness: Human needs are much more than material.
David Noel Freedman: “There is forgiveness”.
4. Temptation & Evil: Jesus overcame temptation. In him, we too can.
“Let us not sin when we are tested/tempted.”
Matt. 26:41 – Watch and pray.
2ND ENGLISH SERVICE
FIRST THINGS FIRST
MATTHEW 6:31-34 | DR. MATHEW LUKE
Jesus offers us timeless wisdom about prioritizing what truly matters in life.
1. Focus on What Truly Matters Most - Seek God and His reign in your life.
● Do our worship, practices, and seeking truly reflect our devotion to God?
● Are we merely going through the motions while neglecting the more significant matters of the heart?
● First Things First means putting God first in your life.
1 Cor. 10:31 - “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
Ephesians 2:10 - “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
2. Pursue Individual Sanctity - Seek His righteousness.
● The Kingdom of God is not just something to be experienced within; it should also be expressed outwardly.
● We should strive for it.
Matt. 5:6 - “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”
Phil. 3:9 - “...and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God based on faith.”
● We should showcase it.
3. Assured of God’s Abundance - You will have all the things you need, not your wants.
● God doesn't give us everything we want, but He always gives us what we need.
● Our responsibility is to serve God, and it is His responsibility to provide for us.
● By seeking God's kingdom and His righteousness above all else, we align ourselves with His divine will and purpose.
