In Drishti IAS Current News Bulletin, we bring to you a summary of news events that happened last week. Recently, the West Bengal Legislative Assembly has unanimously passed the Anti-Rape Bill. The state has named this bill as Aparajita Mahila and Bal (West Bengal Criminal Law Amendment) Bill, 2024. Let us tell you that in this bill, changes have been sought in many sections of BNS 2023. So that the sentence of 10 or 20 years of imprisonment in cases of rape, gang rape and murder can be replaced with death penalty or imprisonment for the rest of the life of the convict. While the bill also includes three important elements like increase in punishment, fast investigation, and quick justice. Which will specifically target cases of sexual assault under the Indian Justice Code and POCSO Act.

Recently, President Draupadi Murmu has approved the formation of the 23rd Law Commission of India. This commission will function from September 1, 2024 to August 31, 2027. It will include a full-time chairman, four full-time members and the Secretary of the Department of Legal Affairs, ex-officio member. This commission will examine the impact of globalization on food security, unemployment. It will also give suggestions to protect the interests of marginalized people.
