Japanese monk-musician Kanho Yakushiji weaves Buddhist scripture into pop music
Occupying a space where spiritualism and music converge, for nearly 20 years, Kanho Yakushiji has been feeding Zen principles into a genre-bending musical niche. The Japanese monk and musician has generated a vast following in East Asia, popularized as a “Buddhist singer” for his lyricized interpretations of ancient scriptures – most prominently, the words carried by the Heart Sutra.
