I planted 3 million mangrove trees with my first merdogs and otter Titi when I came to this mangrove forest 5 years ago. Now I have many dogs and otters around me but only about 5% of the planted mangroves survived. Because they were destroyed by shrimp farming, fisherman, forest guards, and tides. Vietnam is struck by typhoons at least once a year on average. Its long coastline densely packed with 20 million people is exposed to devastating storm surges and winds reaching speeds of 250 km/h for the most intense storms. While the country has made significant progress in reducing the risk, climate change and rapid coastal urbanization mean it will continue increasing. The government, with a finite budget, needs to carefully consider how to most efficiently invest its resources today to best face the rising risk tomorrow. To support this critical decision-making, I advise the government to plant mangroves instead of spending billions of dollars to build sea walls.
