Traffic signs are an integral part of our road infrastructure. They provide critical information, sometimes compelling recommendations, for road users, which in turn requires them to adjust their driving behaviour to make sure they adhere with whatever road regulation currently enforced. A real-time and automatic traffic sign recognition can support and disburden the driver, and thus, significantly increase driving safety and comfort. For instance, it can remind the driver of the current speed limit, warn him about inappropriate actions such as entering a one-way street, overtaking another car in a no overtaking zone, unwanted speeding, etc. An informed driver is less likely to feel anxious even when they are in an unknown neighborhood. There are also lower chances for informed drivers taking a sudden turn or drive into a one-way lane creating a bottleneck or causing an accident. Real-time road signs recognition & alert are essential to avoiding traffic mishaps.
This project could be implemented on an Android device a Traffic Sign Recognition system capable of recognising traffic signs in Mauritius with various colours and shapes. A Mauritian Traffic Sign Dataset will be constructed as part of this project.
