DAILY LIFE: GOD’S ARENA FOR DISCIPLESHIP
MARK 4 | PR. AJOY VARGHESE
1. Introduction to Mark’s Gospel
The four Gospels are ancient biographies and historical accounts “written from below,” without the patronage of those in power. The Gospel of Mark is known for its fast pace and action-packed narrative, capturing the sense of urgency that Jesus had.
2. Two Simultaneous “Perfections” in the Gospels
The Father perfects Jesus through suffering, while Jesus perfects the disciples for the Great Commission.
3. Jesus on a Teaching Spree (Mark 4)
Jesus teaches His disciples in parables, though to those outside, these parables appeared as riddles, conveyed through robust and common imagery.
4. Jesus Teaches Faith (and More) Through a Storm (Mark 4:35-41)
● Jesus sends them into the storm.
● Jesus catches up on sleep while the storm swamps the boat(s).
● No parable had the power to stop them from being afraid.
● The storm reveals that despite all their learning and voluntary sacrifices, their faith was fragile and shallow.
● The disciples are afraid of the storm, but they are even more terrified of Jesus (they “feared with great fear”!).
Digression 1: Jesus is on speaking terms with nature (Psalm 65:7; 89:9; 107:28-30).
Digression 2: “Why are you so afraid?” (Mark 4:40) compared to vs. 41: “They feared with great fear” (terrified).

How Do We Understand God – as the Blessed Trinity
God’s amazing and almost infinite creation is absolutely mysterious, and throughout the ages, the Church has held firmly to the doctrine of the Trinity, which is God’s Tapestry of Truth revealed in the Christian Bible.
A basic tenet of our Christian faith is that God chooses to reveal Himself to us progressively. The Blessed Trinity is a "mystery" revealed by God (Eph 3:2-6).
God wants to embrace us all in His arms of love!
The Christian Church and faith are solidly built on the absolutely fundamental and central doctrine of the Trinity.
1. The whole Christian (or "catholic") Church believes in the Divine Trinity.
2. The Trinity is a formulation, not a fabrication, from the Christian experience of God.
God is love – and love requires an object of love.

The Triune God is working in our lives and in the world.
