They have a pink patch of bare skin above their eyes which allows them to lose excess body heat (a serious problem in the warm South African climate) and a black band across their chest that can help identify them. African Penguins burrow in sand or guano deposits to lay their eggs, shading them and preventing them from getting too hot.
