The Butterfly Nut Effect is also known as the "The Dzhanibekov Effect" which was discovered in space in the year 1985 and it was long kept as a secret.
Now we are recreating this experiment for the first time on earth!
The rotational axis of the nut is changing its direction again and again around 180° until it hits the ground. You can easily try to replicate this experiment. All you need for this experiment is a butterfly nut and a suitable thread that is fixed horizontally. The strange behaviour of the nut is very fast and can´t be observed without a camera that is able to capture slow motion video.
